The Indira Colony School completed 1 year on the 6th of December. We started with 10 children at the beginning of this year, and we are now 52 children strong. The children have shown good progress and some of them are now preparing for entrance tests to mainstream schools.
In April 2017 we were able to admit 10 children to DPS Shiksha Kendra and 9 children to Manas Primary School. Which is quite an achievement for us and we feel proud that we are able to bring our children up to a level where they are able to clear the entrance tests.
In April 2018, we were able to admit 32 children in schools like Rao Ram Singh School, Manas Primary School and Sankalp, Government Primary School. We are part funding the education of 5 children in Rao Ram Singh School, which is a CBSE recognized school.
The residents of the Harijan Basti are such a migratory population that it is hard to keep track of the inflow and outflow of the children. We wish they would consider education a priority and plan their moves accordingly! Our teachers have a constant challenge of starting and re starting lessons to make sure all the children are on the same plane. Kudos to their patience and determination!! Pushpa, Nisha, Sawarana and Mamta are doing a great job.
The older children of DAV public school visit our school and share with our children the projects that they learn in their own school, e.g. water filtration, cleanliness, hygiene, etc. They even did a Nukkad Natak in our Basti to teach the residents about keeping their surrounding clean.
Cognizant Technology Services, Corporate Office and Aravali Biodiversity Park
Nayi Disha has been part of the Cognizant Outreach program for a few years and Nayi Disha is very fortunate to have their support on an on going basis. Our children visited their Office and were so excited to see how a real office works and hope some day they will be part of such offices too.
On November 14th, we took our children to Aravali Biodiversity Park to participate in the I am Gurugram initiative for Save the Forest.
This is a short program on two of our Underprivileged Gifted Mensa Scholars, produced and aired by Australias SBS channel under their Dateline series. It is titled India’s Beautiful Minds. Do see it if you have the time.
We have just touched the tip of the iceberg. Children like these are a national resource and must be helped by all of us.
